How do I find the sum of 4,376 and 877?

My 3rd grade son is having trouble with understanding how to find the sum of 4,376-and 877 in simplest form.

Lets line up the digits of both numbers based on place value.  This will allow us to add the numbers in columns.

 +   8 7 7

Add each digit in the columns starting from the one place.  In the first column, we have 6 + 7.  This is 13.  However, we need to carry a digit over the next place value.  So the sum in the ones column is 3 and we carry the 1 in the next place.

Now we add in the next place value.  Keep in mind the digit that we carried.

          5 3

 

 

The sum is 15.  But we carry the 1 in the next place value and keep the 5 in the current place value.  Repeat this process to continue adding the digits.

The sum of the numbers is 5,253

Add the two numbers together.

Sum means the addition of items.

 

4376 + 877 = 5253

 

If the student is learning how to add math from left to right then it would be as follows.

 

4000+800=4800

4800+300=5100

5100+70=5170

5170+70=5240

5240+6=5246

5246+7=5253

 

This way it reduces calculation errors and you can add it in your head easily.
