A company recently surveyed all employees. Overall  3 out of every 16 perfered the company' current health plan. Additionally 5 out every 8 perfered another plan. A total of 150 did not indicate any preference. How many perfered the company's current health plan.

You have to go through several steps to solve this problem.

 

First, calculate the total fraction of employees that expressed a preference:

 

     3/16  +  5/8  

 

=   3/16  +  10/16      (restate using common denominator)

 

=   13/16

 

Next, calculate what fraction of employees did not express a preference:

 

     16/16  -  13/16  =  3/16

 

Finally, do you notice that this is the same fraction that prefer the current plan?  So the number of employees that prefer the current plan is also 150.
