This can easily be solved using a Venn diagram. First draw two over lapping circles. Label one math and the other English. Since 12 people took math and English, write the 12 in the over lapping circles. Since 24 people took mathematics, write 12 inside the math circle but not in the over lapping part. Now you can see 24 people taking math. Since there are 40 people taking one or the other or both, this leaves 16 in the area of the
english circle who took English but not math.
