About Richard

I have been a teacher most of my life. After graduating from college, I began my teaching career at a high school in Pennsylvania which lasted 36 years. While teaching full time, I attended graduate school earning a Master of Science in mathematics. During those 36 years at a high school, I also taught part-time for a community college for 21 years. I also taught for several other colleges including Penn State. After retiring from my high school position, I moved to Florida and taught for 6 years at Valencia Community College. After 42 years in education, Brevard Community College offered me a couple of classes, so I decided to go into semi-retirement.

Although most of my teaching has been in the classroom, many of my years at the high school level included tutoring students who were unable to attend school for a variety of reasons. In some cases students were absent from school for an extended period of time. Even though the task was rather difficult, I experienced great satisfaction making it possible for those students to finish the school year or in all cases, graduate.

I have always enjoyed studying mathematics and would like to open a student's eyes to the beauty of mathematics and strive to instill in them the same enjoyment. Before coming to a tutoring session, I ask the student to tell me what topic or problem he or she wants to work on so that I can prepare examples and assemble the materials needed to have a successful session. Even though I have had an extensive study in mathematics, there have been times when I struggled, so I can identify with students and understand any frustration they may have.

Students who are having difficulty in mathematics need to get help before they feel that all is lost. It is better to get help early when just a little help goes a long way rather than waiting until the student feels that nothing is understood. In that case it is much more difficult and takes much longer to get back on track.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught algebra 1 to students at Greater Latrobe Junior and Senior High Schools for 36 years. In addition to that I have taught algebra at a community college in Pennsylvania, Valencia College and Eastern Florida State College.

Algebra 2

I have taught algebra 2 for 36 years in a public high school and part-time for 21 years for a community college. After retiring I taught 6 years for Valencia College and 2 years for Eastern Florida State College. Since then I have tutored for WyzAnt with close to 400 hours.

Geometry

I taught high school mathematics in Pennsylvania for 36 years and taught geometry for most of those years. My experience in geometry spans writing proofs(traditional approach) to a more intuitive approach(modern).

Prealgebra

In addition to teaching 36 years in a public school in Pa., I tutored students in a variety of subjects including prealgebra who could not attend school while they were ill or incapacitated in some way so that they could complete their school year successfully.

Precalculus

In addition to teaching precalculus at the high school level, I most recently have taught precalculus at Valencia College and Eastern Florida State College from 2004 to 2012. I am also familiar with the TI-83 graphing calculator which is commonly used in classrooms.

Probability

I have taught probability as a part of statistics courses for the Westmoreland County Community College for 21 years, Valencia College for 6 years, Eastern Florida State College for 2 more years and 2 years for WyzAnt.

Statistics

I taught statistics for 21 years at a community college in Pa. and during that time I instituted a course in statistics at the high school where I taught mathematics. After coming to Florida, I taught statistics at Valencia College(6 years) and Eastern Florida State College(2 years).

Trigonometry

At the high school level I taught trigonometry based on right triangle(traditional method) and also on the unit circle(modern method). After 36 years of teaching at that level, I retired and moved to Florida and taught trigonometry as a part of a pre-calculus course for Valencia College for 6 years.
