About Richard

I have been a teacher most of my life. After graduating from college, I began my teaching career at a high school in Pennsylvania which lasted 36 years. While teaching full time, I attended graduate school earning a Master of Science in mathematics. During those 36 years at a high school, I also taught part-time for a community college for 21 years. I also taught for several other colleges including Penn State. After retiring from my high school position, I moved to Florida and taught for 6 years at Valencia Community College. After 42 years in education, Brevard Community College offered me a couple of classes, so I decided to go into semi-retirement.

Although most of my teaching has been in the classroom, many of my years at the high school level included tutoring students who were unable to attend school for a variety of reasons. In some cases students were absent from school for an extended period of time. Even though the task was rather difficult, I experienced great satisfaction making it possible for those students to finish the school year or in all cases, graduate.

I have always enjoyed studying mathematics and would like to open a student's eyes to the beauty of mathematics and strive to instill in them the same enjoyment. Before coming to a tutoring session, I ask the student to tell me what topic or problem he or she wants to work on so that I can prepare examples and assemble the materials needed to have a successful session. Even though I have had an extensive study in mathematics, there have been times when I struggled, so I can identify with students and understand any frustration they may have.

Students who are having difficulty in mathematics need to get help before they feel that all is lost. It is better to get help early when just a little help goes a long way rather than waiting until the student feels that nothing is understood. In that case it is much more difficult and takes much longer to get back on track.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught algebra 1 to students at Greater Latrobe Junior and Senior High Schools for 36 years. In addition to that I have taught algebra at a community college in Pennsylvania and Valencia Community College and Brevard Community College.

Algebra 2

During the 36 years that I taught mathematics at the high school level, I tutored many students who were physically unable to attend regular classes for extended periods of time. In all cases, students were able to graduate or complete their school year successfully. I am sure that you can make progress with a little help from me.

Geometry

I taught high school mathematics in Pennsylvania for 36 years and taught geometry for most of those years. My experience in geometry spans writing proofs(traditional approach) to a more intuitive approach(modern). Geometry has not changed much regardless of what approach is used.

Prealgebra

Besides the 36 years of teaching high school, I have also taught prealgebra at Valencia Community College for 6 years. In Pennsylvania, I tutored students who could not attend regular classes, enabling them to complete their school year and graduate.

Precalculus

Most recently I have taught precalculus at Valencia College and Eastern Florida State College from 2004 to 2012. I am also familiar with the TI-83 graphing calculator which is commonly used in classrooms.

Probability

I began teaching Probability and Statistics at Westmoreland County Community College in Pennsylvania where I was a part-time instructor. I introduced the subject into Greater Latrobe High School where I was teaching full time. After retiring I moved to Florida and taught Probability and Statistics for Valencia College and Eastern Florida State College. After 44 years in education, I decided to retire and concentrate on tutoring.

Statistics

I have taught statistics at both the high school and college levels for about 25 years. The schools in Florida where I have taught statistics were Valencia Community College and Brevard Community College. I have also taught calculus at these same schools.

Trigonometry

Many of the 36 years that I taught mathematics in high school was devoted to teaching trigonometry. When I moved onto college level teaching, trigonometry was a part of the precalculus course that I taught. I have also taught online courses for Eastern Florida State College.

Straight, to the point and great at teaching the theory

My daughter usually just needs a little additional explanation on the theory/process as she takes an online class and this time drew a teacher that is on her way out. Richard has given my daughter her love of math back!
