Joy and Glenn each went on a bike ride.

- Joy rode at a rate of 0.05 miles per minute.

-Glenn rode at a rate .2 miles per minute.

-Glenn started riding 9 minutes after Joy.

How long after Joy starting riding, in minutes, did it take for Glenn to catch up to Joy?

Glenn is faster than Joy at the rate of (0.2-0.05) which is 0.15 miles per minute. With a head start of 9 minutes, Joy could have traveled 0.45 miles (=9 minutes * 0.05 miles/minute = 0.45 miles). Glenn needs to catch up this 0.45 miles. 

 

We saw that each minute, Glenn can catch up by 0.15 miles. So in three minutes, he will catch up with Joy.

 

Solution Check:

 

In 9 + 3 minutes, Joy covered 12*0.05 = 0.6 miles

 

In 3 minutes, Glenn covered 3*0.2 = 0.6 miles
