You are saving money for a new bicycle. Your parents give you $100 to help your saving get started and you can save $20 a week.

 

Write a linear equation that determines your savings (y) for a given amount (x) of week saving money. Then, determine how long it will take you to save $300 for a new bike.

y = 20x + 100

 

300 = 20x + 100

 

300-100 = 20x +100 - 100         Subtract 100 from both sides of the equation.

 

200 = 20x

 

200/20 = 20x/20                       Divide both sides by 20.

 

10 = x                                      It takes 10 weeks to save $300 for the bike.
