I love math, and I love to teach it.
Dear Samantha,
Another way of looking at this problem is drawing a number line. How many units is 9 and -9 from zero?
<_-9__-8__-7__-6__-5__-4__-3__-2__-1__0__1__2__3__4__5__6__7__8__9__>
For example, here is a story problem, which explains how absolute value can work in the world. You can continue to use the number line. If you were walking in a city toward a park on Zero Road, it would not matter if you were coming from the left of the park or from the right. Distance walked is always positive.
Also, suppose that you were driving in a car. You wanted to get to the zero block, where a store sells ice cream. You are to the left of the ice cream store, nine miles away. You come from the left and move towards the store. How many miles have you driven when you arrive? 9 miles Distance is positive.
I hope that I have helped, too. If I have please give me a thumbs up.
