An open box is to be constructed by cutting x inch squares from the corners of a 20 inch x 30 inch piece of paper. Find an expression for the volume of such a box

From the problem statement:

A 20x30 inch piece of paper, with x-inch squares cut out of the corners.The paper is folded to create a box, find an expression for the volume of the box.

 

The Volume of a Box is legnth x width x height.

V=LWH

 

The height of the box will equal x. 

The length will be 30-2x (one x on each end of the paper)

The width will be 20-2x.

 

So the volume of the box will be:

V= LWH = (30-2x)(20-2x)(x)

 

Multiplying the terms yeilds:

V= 600x-100x²+4x³
