Hey Zach,
(f+g) means x+4+3x-2. Plug 3 in and you'll get 14.
(f*g) means 3x2+10x-8 from multiplying f(x) and g(x). Plug in -2 and you'll get -16.
I assume (f*g)(-2) is not f(g(-2)).
