To estimate the quotient, we round off the divisor to the nearest tens.

 

Round the number 86 to 80.  We round down because of the possibility of a remainder.

 

 

Now we ask this question:  how many times can 80 go into 6918 without going over?

 

80 × 50 = 4000

 

80 × 60 = 4800

 

80 × 70 = 5600

 

80 × 80 = 6400

 

80 × 90 = 7200

 

 

80 goes into 6918 80 times without going over.  So the estimated quotient is 80.

Well, estimating is an art, not a science.  So if your teacher has given you specific instructions on how to estimate, stick to those.  If not, you can ballpark it.

 

6918 is close to 7000.

86 is close to 100.

 

So I'd estimate that 7000 divided by 100 is 70.  Your answer is going to be close to 70.  (When you actually use do the math, it comes out to be 80 and a fraction).
