2 2/3  If we multiply the numerator and denominator by 4, our equivalent fraction is 2 8/12.

 

Now we can subtract

 

4 9/12 - 2 8/12 = 2 1/12.

Now subtract the fraction parts, and then the whole numbers.

1.  You need a common denominator before you can subtract.    Multiple the denominator of 4 by the denominator of 3.

 

12 works for both fractions.

 

 

2.  Start by bringing over the whole numbers:

 

 

 4    3/4  (3/3) =  4     9  /12            Ask yourself, "What can I multiply the bottom denominator by to get 12?"  3
