If a boat travels up river and takes two hours, then travels down water and it takes 1.7 hours and is 2.5 miles per hour faster; how far do you travel one way?

The distance in this problem would be the same up or downstream

 

Let the speed be x upstream and ( x +2.5) downstream

 

2x = 1.7 (x+2.5)

 

0.3x = 1.7 (2.5)

 

X = 14.166

 

Now multiply by 2 to fund the distance one way

 

Distance = 14.166×to

 

= 28.332 miles
