If two-thirds of A is five-twelfiths, and 4/3 of B is 8/9 Which is larger?

Set up equations.  The question seems to be asking if A or B is greater.    Remember that the work 'of' refers to multiplication!!

 

Remember that you can make these fractions easier to solve by canceling out common multiples in denominator and numerator.

 

1)   2/3 X A = 5/12   solve for A   -->    A  =    3 X 5 /  12 X 2

                                           A = 5/8

 

2)  4/3 X B  = 8/9      Solve for B -->    B = 3 X  8 / 9 X 4

                                                     B = 2/3

 

5/8 < 2/3  So B is larger!!
