The volume of a box with a square base and a height of 7 inches is 252 cubic inches. What is the length of an edge of the base?

The volume of a box = height * width * length.

The base is square, so width=length.  That makes the volume of a square box = height * length * length.

 

The volume = 252 cu in.   The height = 7 inches.

      252 = 7 * L * L

       36 = L*L

       L = 6 inches          (take the square root of both sides)
