The easiest thing to do is to convert everything to minutes...

 

4' + 24"

(4hr(60min/1hr))+24min

Note that the notation of hours cancel out, hr/hr.

It is just as important to cancel units as numbers.

240 m + 24 m=264 m

 

1 hr + 35 min

(1hr(60min/1hr) + 35 min

60 min + 35 min=95 min

 

Now...

264 min - 95 min=169 min

Let's convert...

169min(1hr/60min)=2 hours 49 min
