     This problem can be solved with a proportion; set it up.

 

                    4 cups of flour = 3 loaves

 

                    12 cups of flour  = _X___

 

 

cups/loaves  =  Cups/Loaves           4 cups of flour/3 loaves   = 12 cu of flour/X loaves

 

 

Cross multiply:     4X = 36               Divide by the number next to "X."

 

                              X=_________   Answer

 

Then you can substitute the value for "X" back into the equation to check your result.
