application problem

Barb goes on a diet and loses 1/3 of her body weight. If she weighs 120 AFTER the diet, how many pounds did she weigh before? I have to write an equation and solve.

Anthony F.

Let x="her body weight before" then x(1/3)=x/3=120 pounds. Solving for x gives x=120(3)=360 pounds. Thus, 360 pounds is her weight before the diet. To check this, 360(1/3)=360/3=120 pounds which is her weight after the diet and is 1/3 of 360.

Let x="her weight before diet" so x(1/3)=x/3=120. Solve for x by moving 3 in the denominator to the other side which gives x=120(3)=360 pounds. To check this, multiply 360 by 1/3 which is 360/3=120.
