What is the percentage of $5 to $8?

This is an math question. This question comes from the go math book. It is part of the guided practice on page 144. It's headline is called Using Percent of Change. It starts on the back of page 143. It starts on page 144.

THX for book reference, but I don't have it.  After reading our Answers, PLZ compare them to what the book says.

 

If the question is really "What is the percent of change moving from $5 to $8?" that is different than. "What percent is $5 of $8."  The percent of change is sometimes called the percent difference.

 

The percent difference expression starts with a base value (here it is $5) and asks what percent difference it takes to get to the second number (here it is $8).  So, it would be calculated as (8-5)/5  =  3/5  =  60%.

 

Now, Jennifer, you have some reading to do.

It appears you are asking...  What percentage of 8 is 5?

 

so 5 = X% of 8 or   5 = 8(x/100)

x/100 = 5/8

x = 500/8 = 62.5%

 

5 is 62.5% of 8
