Underline the 3 out of 5. This means that you can make a fraction of 3/5= part/Total. There are 45 (Total)in the class, so you can set up a proportion.
3/5 = part/Total You are missing the part.
3/5 = X/45 Then just cross multiply to solve for "X."
3(40) = 5X
120 = 5X Solve for "X."
120/5 = X
24 = X Therefore, out of the 45 students, 24 have brown eyes. Answer

P.S. Another way of doing it is changing 3/5 to a decimal and multiplying by 45. 3/5= .6 .6(45)=27
