Let N=the number
Translate:
"The sum of a number and 2 is 6 less than twice that number" means
N + 2 = -6 + 2 * N
Now, the easy math:
N + 2 = -6 + 2N (re-write)
2 = -6 + N (subtract N from both sides)
8 = N (add 6 to both sides)
Checking (very important):
Is 8 + 2 = -6 + 2(8) ?
10 = -6 + 16 ?
10 = 10 ? yes
