How do you think the caste system that developed in India compares to the class system that exists in the United States?

Does a class system exist in the US?  If so, what are it's aspects?  It is true that the children of the wealthy generally have greater access to the best educational and vocational opportunities.  And this access tends to aid the perpetuation of wealth from generation to generation.  However it is not enforced by governmental or social regulation, in the way it has been in India.
