Maureen drove 50 miles per hour to her sister's house. The two of them drove from there to their mom's house. Maureen's sister, leann, drives a tad faster than maureen ( at about 60 miles per hour). It took them a total of 4 1/2 hours for maureen to travel 255 miles from her house to her mom's house. How far does maureen live from leann?

Distance = (Rate)(Time), so Time = Distance/Rate

 

Let x = distance from Maureen's house to Leann's house

 

Then, 255-x = distance from Leann's house to mom's house

 

let T₁ = time it takes to go from maureen's to Leann's

    T₂ = time it takes to go from Leann's to Mom's

 

T₁ + T₂ = 4.5

 

So, x/50 + (255-x)/60 = 4.5

 

Multiply the equation by the LCD, 300:  6x + 5(255-x) = 1350

 

                                                       6x + 1275 - 5x = 1350 

 

                                                                         x = 75 miles
