If the length of a side of a square is x then the area = x²

 

If we double the length then a side is 2x and the area is (2x)(2x) = 4x²

 

The ratio is 1:4   and the area is quadrupled, not doubled...

If the length is doubled, the area is doubled.

 

The ratio of original to new is 1/2.
