The question is seeking the 2D "direction" of a line on a flat plane.  The numbers are coordinates on that plane which in turn locate the line.

Two points define a line.

 

The problem gives two points:   P₁ is (3,6)  and P₂ is (6,9)

The points are in the form of (x,y) if you are plotting them (good idea if you want to understand slope).

 

The slope formula is "rise over run," that is how much the y-value rises divides by how much the x-value rises.  It is:

      slope = ( y₂ - y₁ ) / (x₂ - x₁ )         

      slope = ( 9  -  6 ) / ( 6 -  3 )               [ so let's put in the values for the 2 points ]

      slope = (3) / (3)

      slope = 1                (that plots like a line going up to the right 45°)
