One car leaves in one direction going at a rate of 60 miles per hour, and in the opposite direction (at the same time) another car leaves at 50 miles per hour. I would like to know at what time will the cars be 330 miles apart.

We know that the distance from these two cars traveling is the rate times the time, which Subsequently gives us the distance. These two distances combined need to equal 330, as specified by the problem. 

 

We get a product-sum equation of: 

 

50mph(x) + 60mph(x) = 330mi
