Question

Anita, working as a sales clerk is paid a basic rate of $3.75. During the Christmas season she
works 6hours overtime on Friday at time and a quarter, 8 hours overtime on Saturday at time
and a half and 5 hours overtime on Sunday at double time.
(a) Calculate Anita’s overtime wage for that particular week.
(b) Anita works a basic week of 40 hours. Evaluate her basic wage.
(c) Calculate Anita’s gross wage for that particular week during the Christmas

Time and a quarter means that she is paid 25% (1/4) more than her basic wage.

 

So find 25% of 3.75 and add it to 3.75.  Since she worked 6 hours at that new wage, multiply 6 times her new wage.

 

Time and a half means that she is paid 50% (1/2) more than her basic wage.

 

So find 50% of 3.75 and add it to 3.75.  She worked 8 hours at that new wage, so multiply 8 times her new wage.

 

Double time means that she is paid twice as much as her normal wage. 

 

So multiply her basic wage by two and then multiply by 5 since she worked 5 hours at the wage.

 

(a) Add all of that and you get her overtime wage.

 

(b) Her basic wage is for the week is 40 hours times her basic wage.

 

(c) Her gross wage for the week is the total of her basic wage and her overtime wage.
