Once you learn to translate the words and phrases of a word (story) problem into concise, precise math expressions and operations, the math is easy.
"Nine more than 2 times a certain number is 137"
9 + 2 * x = 137
Now, make a table of the ways to translate words:
"is" means =
"more than" +
"times" *
"of" usually means multiply
"less than" -
. . .
For example, I like to write:
"The number of red marbles (R) is 6 less than the number of blue marbles (B)"
R = -6 + B
