We have a couple of ways to start off. We can either distribute the 5 to the i + 4, or we can divide both sides by 5. For simplicity's sake, we'll go with the division way:
5(i + 4) / 5 = 40 / 5
i + 4 = 8
Now to complete the variable isolation, we need to subtract 4 from both sides:
i + 4 - 4 = 8 - 4
i = 4
We can check our work:
5(4 + 4) = 40
5 * 8 = 40
40 = 40
