You want to put x by itself on one side of the equals sign, so start by subtracting 5/3 from both sides to get
-11x / 5 = (-1/12) - (5/3)
At this point, I will multiply by sides by -1 to get
11x / 5 = (1/12) + (5/3)
Now add the fractions on the right-hand side. The common denominator is 12, so
(1/12) + (20/12) = 21/12 = 7/4
In the last step, I factored out a 3 from the top and bottom. Now we have
11x/5 = 7/4
Multiply both sides by 5/11 to get x by itself on the left-hand side:
