There isn't really a simple trick to do these problems; you just have to look at the numbers you're given and think of other ways of writing them, then looking for a pattern. For example,

 

1^1 = 1

2^2 = 4

3^3 = 27

....

5^5 = 3125

 

So it should be obvious that the answer is 4^4 = 256.
