The difference is 2+(-3) is an addition process while 2(-3) is a multiplication process as indicated by having parentheses surrounding -3 and no addition or substitution sign before the parentheses, as in 2(-3).
A math rule that must be observed:
- The positive or plus '+' sign is not typically included BEFORE a positive number, rather implied. In contrast, a negative sign must be placed BEFORE the number to indicate it is indeed negative.
With that, 2+(-3) is adding 2 to -3 resulting or equalling -1 since the negative number is higher than the positive number and when a positive and a negative are added or substituted, the process is always a substitution and not an addition.
As for 2(-3), it is 2 multiplied or times -3, and the result is -6, because a negative and a positive when multiplied always give a negative result.
