How is 35.88 written in expanded form?

I would write it like this:

30  +5  +  .8+  .08

 

or, alternatively

30  +  5  +  8/10 + 8/100

It's hard to tell exactly what this question is getting at, but I'm betting they are talking about place value. 

 

the 3 is in the tens place so its value is 3 x 10

the 5 is in the ones place so its value is 5 x 1

the first 8 is in the tenths place so its value is 8 x 0.1

the last 8 is in the hundredths place so its value is 8 x .01

 

so I would write it like this: 

(3 x 10) + (5 x 1) + (8 x 0.1) + (8 x .01) = 35.88 

 

Does that seem to fit with the rest of what you are studying right now?
