The key on this type of question is to get a common denominator on the fractions so that you can add them together. On this one that would be 24, so the first fraction becomes

3_7/8 + 5_5/24

=3_21/24 + 5_5/24

=8_26/24

From there then you would want to simplify the fraction down as much as possible … so 26/24 becomes 13/12, and then you can make that 1_1/12

So the full answer here would be

8 + 1_1/12 = 9_1/12

The numbers 3 and 5, you add them to get=8. For the fractions, you need a common denominator, which will be 24 since 8 and 24 divide into 24. 

 

For the 7/8, 8 goes into 24 - 3 times, so you also multiply that by the top number, which is 3x7= 21.

For the 5/24, 24 goes into 24 - 1 time, so you also mulltiply that by the top number, which is 1x5= 5.

Then you add 21+5= 26.

The answer is 8 26/24 or 8 13/12 if you reduce.
