There's an additional charge of $350 for toxic waste disposal for any job that includes more than $150 square feet of tile. Express the cost, y, of refinishing a floor as a function of the number of square feet, x, to be refinished.

Let x = the number of square feet of tile flooring to be refinished, and y = the cost of refinishing.

• A floor-refinishing company charges $1.83 per square foot to strip and refinish a tile floor up to 1000 ft²

 

         ($1.83)x for x ≤ 1000 ft²

 

• There's an additional charge of $350 for toxic waste disposal for any job that includes more than 150 square feet of tile

 

         $350 for x > 150 ft²

 

Hence there are two cost expressions and we must write a piece-wise equation:
