Note that the boundary values (-5) and (5) contain closed circles to show that these values are included in the solution sets for the given inequalities.
Had our given compound inequality been:
x < -5 or x > 5
Then the boundary values (-5) and (5) would have contained open circles to show that these values are not included in the solution sets for these inequalities.
