Although many people tend to think of the Middle Ages as the "Dark Ages" (and in some ways, that is accurate), the Middle Ages also brought many wonderful things to society. For example, illustrated books first appeared during the Middle Ages. Many wonderful universities were also established during the Middle Ages, as well as the first formal hospitals. Even small things like chivalry were believed to originate during that time period.
Of course they were called the "Dark Ages" for reasons as well. There was great poverty, and many many health issues arose from poor sanitation. There was also a very powerful religious fervor, which often lead to intolerance, which in turn lead to banishment, pogroms and even torture. Many powerful people were very small minded, and often the majority of people suffered at the hands of the rich and nobility.
It was a times of great light, but also great darkness.
