Just write an equation that says EXACTLY what the problem says:
First, assign a variable to the number, so we can use it in the equation. Call it x
"six times the number" -- 6x
"increased by 17" -- +17
"is" -- equals or =
-121 -- just what it says
So that gives an equation: 6x + 17 = -121
Let's solve it:
6x + 17 = -121
Subtract 17 from both sides:
6x + 17 - 17 = -121 - 17
6x = -138
Divide both sides by 6:
6x / 6 = -138 / 6
x = -23
That's the answer -- -23
