Solution:

add -2x and -0.5 to both sides of the equation:

3x-2x+0.5-0.5 = 2x -2x + 5/8 - 0.5 and  x = (5/8) - (1/2) = 1/8 or x = 0.625 - 0.5 = 0.125

Check solution by substituting for x in the original equation:

3(1/8) + 0.5 = 2 ( 1/8) + 5/8 and (3/8) + (1/2) = 7/8 = (1/4) + (5/8) = 7/8 and the solution checks

for x = 1/8 or 0.125

First, I would convert the 0.5 to 1/2. This will make it easier to see the Least Common Denominator or LCD. You want to remember what you do to one side you have to do to the other. Secondly, you want to get like terms on either side of the equal sign. You can do this by subtracting the 2X from both sides and the 1/2 from both sides.

3X+ 1/2 - 2X - 1/2 = 2x + 5/8 - 2X - 1/2

This forms a new equation of X = 5/8 - 1/2. Find the LCD of the two fractions and you;ll have your answer. (1/8)
