on the Richter scale, the magnitude, R, of an earthquake of intensity, I, is given by R=log(i/io), where io is the intensity of a barely felt zero-level earthquake. if the intensity of an earthquake is 1000io, what is its magnitude on the Richter scale?

Inputing 1000io into the equation yields:

R = log (1000io/io)

 

this simplifies to:

R = log (1000)

 

Assuming the log has a base of 10, R evaluates to:

R = 3
