To answer the first part of the question: There can be various combinations of nickels and dimes that can amount to $1.65. For example we can start with 33 nickels and NO dimes and the go on to 31 nickels and 1 dime ......etc.

 

As far as the multiple choice part is concerned, if the value of the nickels is 5n then the number of nickels is n and the number of dimes is (21-n).

 

The value of the dimes is thus 10(21-n) cents.
