Question

Assuming the average speed of sound waves in water is 1500 meters per second,determine in seconds,how long it would take a sonar to hit the bottom and return to the recorder if the water depth is 7500 meters

1500 meters per second is the speed of travel

 

Depth is 7500 ft to the floor of the ocean

 

however it has to travel down and back up so you have 7500 x 2 = 15,000 meters of total travel

 

so to detrmiine tiem you will take 15,000 the total travel and divide by 1500 the distance it can travel in  a second

 

15,000(m)/1500(m) - 10 seconds.
