1 {Cuando buceaban, tenían miedo de lo que verían}...or 2 {Cuando buceaban, tenían miedo de lo que vieran}

Hi,

 

In the above two examples, I feel I should be using the subjunctive {2} 'vieran' and not the conditional {1} 'verían'.

 

Please tell me which to use, and if so (quite probably!) why I am wrong.

I will go with the first option. Since it has the same tense in the main sentence as well as in the subordinated one.
