This has nothing to do with how fast Alex ran. Look at what they ask you to find... "Find the total distance that Alex ran."
Alex ran around the 400m track once, then 2 1/2 more times. He ran the track a total of 3 1/2 times.
(3 1/2)(400m) = (7/2)(400)= 7(200)=1400m
The rate at which he ran had nothing to do with it.
