Erika,
Mutually exclusive, in essence, means that two events can't occur at the same time. Or, one event keeps the other from happening.
In a deck of cards, if you were to pull a face card then you couldn't have pulled a number card. Similarly, if you pulled a black card, you couldn't have pulled a red card.
But, on the other hand, you can pull a red seven or a black face card.
