What does this sideways sad face next to a not mean?

So I play the trombone.  I have this piece of music and it has an eight note with a sideways sad face next to it.  I know it's not a slur or a tie cause there is only one note there.  It's not a glissandro either.  I think it might be where you play the note and go down (to make it sound like jazz music).  Also I need to know how to play it on the trombone.  The note is high D in 1st position and then a measure later it is a high E flat in 3rd position.
