Question

Two men start from 2 places 600 km apart and travel towards each other, the first travelling 5 km/h faster than the second. They meet after 8 hours. Find the speed of the fastest man.

distance = rate(time)

 

Let x and y be the speed of each man respectively

each travels 8 hours

total distance added together D_x+D_y=600km

 

if x travels at speed 'r'

y travels at speed 'r-5' since person x travels 5km/hr faster

 

Dx=8r

D_y=8(r-5)=8r-40

 

D_x+D_y=600

8r+8r-40=600

16r=640

r= 40 km/hr

 

This is the rate of the fastest man.

 

The slower man travels 5km/hr slower=35 km/hr
