The price of a scooter was increased by $5. After a 20% discount, the scooter sold for $72. What was the original price of the scooter?

Need to show how to solve the percent question

Mai V.

I don't know why there's no option for me to answer, but I can tell you that this is the shortest and most effective method out of the other 3 answers:

100/80×$72=$90
$90-$5=$85

This is percentage/fraction.

Not shortest -- most terse.  Not most effective, unless, of course, you know the student very, very well.

Perhaps Bonnie will shed some light on effectiveness.

David W is correct.  Assuming the student didn't understand how to set up the problem - a fairly safe assumption or the problem wouldn'tbe posted here in the first place - most tutors try to go show the student the step by step logical process to derive the equation.  In this fashion it is hoped the student will obtain an understanding of the process for future use.  As a confused student I'm not sure I would have any idea how you arrived at the equation 100/80 x $72 = $90.

This is exactly the same way I solved the problem.  David W. chose to go with the sale price  of $72 being 80% of the new price or .8(P+5)=72

We answered this question at the same time. Perhaps a few seconds difference.

Michael,
My apologies if the comment came across as terse. Was merely pointing it out to Bonnie.  Happens all the time in here.  Did not mean to imply any criticism.
