a bird travels 400 miles. the first 100 miles are traveled at a rate of 100 mph.the next 100 miles at a rate of 200mph.what was the average speed of the bird?

The first 100 miles is 100 mph.
The second 100 miles is 200 mph.
The second 100 miles is 300 mph.
The fourth 100 miles is 400 mph.
 
So for each 100 mile, his speed is 100 mph.
 
To find the average speed, we take the total of each speed in mph, and then divide by 4.
 
(100 + 200 + 300 + 400) / 4 =
 
1000 / 4 = 250
 
The birds average speed is 250 mph.

The speed listed is a rate.

I think the issue in the problem is that the rates are given.  These rates are in the units mph, which is speed, and the question asks for the speed.  Maybe the question should be asking how much time is taken to cover the miles.
