A faucet leaks 1 oz of water per minute.

How many gallons of water are wasted in a year?

If water costs $11.20 per 1000 gallons, how much additional money is being spent on the water bill?

Mark M. must have heard that saying that my mom used to quote:  "A pint's a pound the world around."
However, a gallon of water weighs 8.34 or 8.35 lbs.  That is 133.23 oz per gallon.   That gives $44.12.
Hmm... enough savings for an small ice cream cone.

My mother is responsible for much that I know. She did know the difference between fluid and solid measures.
A fluid ounce is not the same as an avoirdupois ounce. 16 avoirdupois ounces is equal to 1 pound.

1 pint = 16 oz
1 quart = 2 pints = 32 oz
1 gallon = 4 quarts = 128 oz.

In the United States the conversion factor is 128 fl oz = 1 gal
For UK conversion 160 fl oz. = 1 gal

For US fluid ounces to gallons conversion Mark M is correct.  It's easy enough to google the conversion factor.

The funny part is that, as stated, the answer isn't actually correct.
A year is actually 365 1/4 days.  That is why we add an extra day
to the calendar every 4 years (February 29).  There is an unaccounted
for 6 hours there equaling to an extra 360 mins.

These questions, to actually be correct, should be stated per 365 day calendar year.
But, that's just nitpicking since the book answer and teacher would agree with Mark M.

O.K., I search using Bing:
"The weight of a gallon of milk is only slightly greater than a gallon of water, about 3% more. A US gallon with 2% milkfat weighs about 8.4 pounds, compared to 8.6"

We're not talking about plain water here!

Alas, not milk, but faucet water is not distilled water.

A US liquid pint is a measure of volume, not of weight. It is defined as 472 g of water at 16.7° C.
