Convert y=x^2+7x-8 in to vertex form

Conversion into vertex form is done by completion of the square
 
y = x2 + 7x                    - 8
y = x2 + 7x + (7/2)2      - 8 - (7/2)2
y = (x + 7/2)2 - 8 - 49/4
y = (x + 7/2)2 - 81/4
 
Vertex (-7/2, -81/4)

Note that the vertex form of a parabolic equation is
y = a(x-h)2+k
with vertex being at (h,k)
 
This is why you need to complete the square to work the problem as Mark M. did
